Quick Tips on calming the nervous system

Updated: Jun 7

  1. Stop. Check in. Are you safe? Smell! Really get a big breath in and smell and describe what you are smelling. This really helps you get in the moment! Look around, what do you see? What does the ground feel like? Can you connect to the ground? Take a drink, what does it taste like? Try to get your senses working to come back and ground in the present moment.

  2. Go for a short, slow, mindful walk in nature. Sit under a tree and try to connect to that nurturing, grounding trees energy.

  3. Ask for a hug, or hug a pet. Hold your hug for as long as you need until you feel relaxed, safe, and in your body.

  4. Yawn. Engage your vagus nerve and your parasympathetic system. Allow yourself to really yawn and stretch!

  5. Journal! Write out what is causing you stress, and work on those at a later time with a coach or Theta Healer to release any blocks that may be keeping you in fight-or-flight, or keeping you from being with your innate inner peace and rest.

  6. Take a bath or shower! Be in water. Allow the healing energies of the water to wash away and cleanse your nervous system.

  7. Play with your inner child! Show your inner child that you are there with them, that you are safe, listen to them, and have fun with them!

  8. Meditate!

  9. Sit in meditation and call in your circles of sanctuary - calling in all of your spirit guides, ancestors, animal allies, tree beings, mountain spirits, spirits of the land, and the Creative Source to hold you and love you up.

  10. Breathe! Take long breaths. Start by just lightly noticing the breath, then slowly allow it to get deeper and longer. Start by breathing in for 3 and breathing out for 3 with no pauses, and slowly increase that to a count of 7 in and 7 out. Try for a few minutes, and slowly increase the time of being present in your body and breathing.

  11. Box breathing can be helpful for some as well. Counting and breathing in for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. Repeat. Try for at least 5 minutes, and work upwards if this feels good!

  12. Most importantly, know you are safe, you are loved, and you can reach out anytime for added support!
